The Truth about In-Vitro FertilizationResearchers have been conducting enormous studies to uncover the complexities of human beginnings. Artificial insemination and 'in vitro fertilization have been going on for some years. 'Helping' infertile married couples to have a child is a noble quest of in-vitro fertilization, however, little is known behind this quest.

Reproductive technology community conduct procedures to fertilize eggs in petridish. Most often, they produce multiple human embryos or tiny human beings, of which, only one is chosen to implant in the womb of the woman to allow it to develop into a fetus and ultimately a baby. The other unselected embryos are either destroyed or frozen for a period of time, until such time they are to be killed or destroyed. Doctors for life consider every human embryo a human being and firmly believe that destruction of these embryos is nothing less than mass murder.
Dr. Jerome Lejeune, a great French geneticist and defender of human embryos once said about these culture of death technological advances: "Chemical contraception is really like making love without making a baby; in vitro fertilization is making a child without making love; abortion is undoing the child; pornography is undoing love - all of these are contrary to the true nature of human love and life." In the context, Lejeune quoted a woman who had undergone in vitro fertilization as saying she "made love with a syringe."
A recent report from Los Angeles, USA dated September 9, 1997, disclosed a two-year old girl who was born as a result of artificial insemination legally parentless. A month after her birth, the couple who hired the surrogate mother filed for a divorce. The man contested that since he had filed for a divorce from his wife, he never legally became the girl's father. He admitted signing the surrogacy contract, but argued that no court can determine if this baby was a "child of the marriage", no family law court could order him to pay child support. The court also ruled that the wife is not entitled to be declared the legal mother of this girl. The rulings mean the girl currently has no legal parents.
There are now legal uncertainties and implications as a result of these technological advances. Unmarried couples, homosexual and lesbian couples and even women beyond the normal child-bearing age are utilizing this artificial method of reproduction. The children raised by these procedures are still young and the social problems involved are yet to become evident. (Sources: Communique N. 1,1,/9/9H. Faith for Life by Fr. Paul Marx, OSB, HLI .
