Why not? Despite constant campaign on Natural Family Planning (NFP) as the only physiological, the most beautiful and natural way of fertility regulation, our Department of Health statistics show that not more than 18% of married couples of childbearing age in our country use NFP.
|
Natural family planning boasts the following advantages:
-
98-99% effective in couples who are properly instructed
-
no harmful physical side-effects
-
success rate dependent on a couple's mutual motivation and cooperation
-
applicable in all circumstances of a woman's reproductive life, e.g. with irregular periods, during breastfeeding, approaching menopause, or returning to fertility after contraceptive medication
-
can be used to achieve or avoid pregnancy
-
it strengthens marriage and family, that would foster sexual self-control as a good example of chastity in married life of teenage children. It also allows husbands understand the psychology of their wives by understanding the nature of their menstrual cycle.
With the above advantages, still few couples do not use NFP.
There are five reasons why:
Ignorance. Those who promote artificial contraception Prefer to contemptuously and dishonestly dismiss this highly scientific method as ovulation method. This pervasive propaganda frightens many men and women into believing that natural family planning is backward and ineffective.\par For the doctors, despite their many years of education, most are ignorant about NFP. A doctor who knows little or nothing about NFP is unlikely to promote it, but will instead prescribe the drugs that are so readily presented to him by the representatives of the major pharmaceutical corporations. Many doctors also believe that women are too unmotivated or unintelligent to learn NFP. Finally, there is a great profit to be made in the development, manufacturing and distribution of contraceptives and abortifacients, no such profit motive exists with NFP.
Laziness. NFP takes sometime and effort to learn. In this age of instant gratification, the equation "FAST + EASY = GOOD" is an almost inviolable law. If a method of birth regulation requires any effort, most people summarily disqualify it. Most Western women would rather take a long-term gamble on their health that put a short-term effort into learning about their bodies. And, sadly, most men could not care less which method of the contraception their wives use, as long as they themselves aren't inconvenienced and have access to sex at all times.
As Emma Clardy Craven has said, "women are being seen as wombs to be deactivated rather than human beings with lives to be fulfilled."
The Profit Motive. The contraceptive makers and most gynecologists would have the public believe quick 'n easy contraception is the only way to go. The manufacturers say this because they are making huge amounts of money off women who are willingly and ignorantly drug their reproductive systems - and the profits from the sale of these drugs amount to more than $5 billion per year! This sum does not include the profits reaped by individual doctors and population organizations.
Time is money for busy health professionals. When they are faced with a choice between an easy 150 bucks for a five minute birth prevention pill prescription or referring a couple to NFP teacher, the lure of quick money
Fear of abstinence and failure to understand the nature of marital love. When one considers how endearing and unifying it is for a husband or wife to abstain despite their desires, out of consideration for each other or family, abstinence becomes a unifying act of love. In contrast, in a chemically or surgically sterile marriage, abstinence by either husband or wife is considered a burden and becomes a disunifying event.
Studies have shown that a regular period of abstinence helps strengthen marriages by obliging couples to show their affection in other ways for a while every month, thereby improving vital communication skills. Of course, a person infected with anti\_life mentality thinks this point is moot, because he believes that both animals and are simply slaves of their hormones and have no self-control.
