Pro-Life Philippines Foundation along with its co-members in the National Committee on the Filipino Family celebrated the International Day of Families last May 15 inside the Department of Social Welfare and Development Compound in Batasan Hills, Quezon City.

For the year 2009, the organizers opted to center the year’s theme on valuing the importance of mothers with the theme: “Mothers and Families: Challenges in a Changing World. It was given a local version coined as “Si Nanay, Matatag sa Lahat ng Bagay.”

Each participating group of the committee brought and treated delegates, which were mostly mothers, to a day of forum and entrepreneurship where they were provided with skills and business tips to cope with the financially challenging times.

Speakers during the event were inspirational writer Mr. Francis Kong, actress Melanie Marquez, and Go Negosyo Mentors. Undersecretary Luwalhati Pablo greeted the mothers on behalf of the DSWD.

Through the efforts of DSWD’s National Committee on the Filipino Family and in cooperation of groups and organizations coming from the public and private sectors such as Pro-Life, the celebration of the International Day of Families was made possible. The event aims to further strengthen the bonds between the members of the family and to focus on the social issues the family is inevitably involved.

The celebration is the United Nation’s response to the ever-changing society which consequently affects family life in all its aspects. Based on the proclamation crafted by the members of the United Nations General Assembly in 1989, the year 1994 was considered the first “International Year of the Family.”
