A journey begins with a single step and this was what the organizers of Pro-Life Meycauayan City took in light of their fierce commitment to guard and preserve the sanctity of life.
In their eager pursuit to promote the culture of life, a group of parishioners headed by Rev. Msgr. Epitacio Castro of the local Parish of St. Francis of Assisi in Meycauayan City, Bulacan decided to establish its own local Pro-Life Center in their own parish, which was formally launched last May 23 during the oath-taking ceremonies of their very own officers. Pro-Life Philippines Executive Director Marita Wasan with Pro-Life Philippines Program Officer Weena Meily witnessed the momentous event.
“It was a picture of total commitment!” Meily said. “They were determined to be promoters of the culture of life.”
Before the formal heralding of the said pro-life chapter, the organizers personally went to Pro-Life’s old office inside of the Good Shepherd Convent last April to meet up with the foundation’s incumbent staff. Armed with a mission, they went on straight to the point of expressing their interest of instituting their own pro-life center in Meycauayan City.
“They asked for help on how to put up a pro-life center in their parish, because of their deep concern for the youth in their area,” Meily said.
According to the National Statistics Office, Meycauayan City has an estimate of 200,000 residents and a huge percentage of this population belong to the age bracket of 13 to 30. Like in Metro Manila, the organizers of Pro-Life Meycauayan City admitted that they have observed QC many cases of teen pregnancies, attempted abortions, family breakdown, etc. thriving within their vicinity.
“Indeed they were disturbed by realities of a culture of death” Meily said.
Today, even before the oath taking, Pro-Life Meycauayan City is in full operation trying to cater and reach out to troubled families, men, women, teenagers, and children.
“No one gives what he does not have. You cannot say you value life if you yourself do not give value to life” said Msgr. Castro during his opening speech. A memorandum of agreement will soon be signed between the national and their own local chapter.
Aside from the oath-taking, Wasan gave the new officers and members of the newly-established pro-life center the pro-life orientation lecture. She made mention of the basic elements of the pro-life way of life and the several anti-life issues plaguing the society today.
