January 20, 2009 marked the premiere of the film “Hilot” directed by Neal Tan. Sr. Pilar, endorsed the film for Pro-Life Philippines. At the premiere were the other endorsers – CBCP and Department of Education. It is the story of an abortionist named Amparo (played by Melissa Mendez), her daughter – Carmen (Empress Schuck) and their struggles in life. Carmen is a fifteen-year old girl who loves children inspite of all the intrigues thrown at her. When one of her classmates died, she was able to speak up. She told her mother that it’s wrong to conduct abortion because it’s not only the life of the unborn baby which is being placed into danger but also the life of the mother, this time, her own classmate.
Amparo has a changed life after she was put in jail and after she had the time to talk with her regular client, Claudia (Glenda Garcia) who also hoped to correct all the mistakes she had committed in the past. At the end of the story, an old man whom Carmen knew was her grandfather was actually her real father. Her mother became an abortionist because she wanted to revenge on her husband, a philanderer. After Amparo’s death, Carmen pursued her dream and somehow became a pro-life advocate by being a good pre-school teacher.
Truly, this film moved me. I can say that it was a remarkable piece for it awakens the viewers to the reality of life, the effects of premarital sex to the youngsters, the effects of abortion and how people become susceptible to do bad things just to escape from their past.
Moreover, it involves countless lessons that everyone should keep in mind. These are the following:
1. God allows us to live and He is the only who has the right to get it back from us.
2. Every man/father should be responsible enough to protect and care for his wife and children.
3. Every woman/mother should practice quality time, love and attention to her husband and children despite some misunderstanding from the past.
4. Every child is obliged to study hard and to speak out for his/her rights regarding school or family matters. And in return, they should be heard.
5. Before engaging yourself into abortion, think first and then, think again. Accept the things that cannot be changed. Remember that crisis is not an excuse to cease a potential life.
6. A baby is not just a clot of blood. From the very start, it has human life.
7. Anger should not be the reason or the driving force to vengeance.
8. Every awful thing done has its consequence (rule of karma).
9. Live life to the fullest and try to appreciate it. Challenges are just the spice of life. It’s your choice to be happy and to live according to the will of God.
It is one of the movies that every pro-life advocate out there shouldn’t miss. It can help you in realizing your purpose here on Earth – to live and love your life as well as the lives of the other people created by God. (Beverly Grace Andal)
“The product, abortion, is skillfully marketed and sold to the woman at the crisis time in her life. She buys the product, finds it defective and wants to return it for a refund. But it’s too late.”
- Carol Everett
(former abortion-provider, speaking of “abortion clinics” in the USA)
