MANILA, 24 January 2008— Pro-Life Philippines will launch Pro-Life month and celebrate its 20th year of foundation on February 3 with a Pro-life Mass at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City.

Pro-Life founder Sr. Pilar Versoza, RGS said in a statement that the celebration of Pro-Life month reminds everybody of the responsibility to respect life, especially the unborn.
“We [have] responsibility to respect, take care and defend our own life and the life of all people― the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the unborn babies that we forget have human life already, and that is why there is so much abortion today,” Versoza said.
She took exception from the propaganda of certain sectors putting the blame on having too much children as the reason for the country’s poverty.
“Yes, there is poverty in our country,” Versoza said. “Not because there are too many people or we do not have enough land or food. But because of selfishness, corruption, mismanagement of our resources and a huge foreign debt,” she added.
Versoza further emphasized that the Church is not opposed to family planning but rather promotes responsible parenthood so that married couples will not resort to using contraceptives.
Recently the government had allotted a huge chunk of the budget to support artificial family planning methods.
An ongoing vigorous campaign is also being spearheaded by Pro-life and Pro-family groups against the proliferation of advertisements promoting the use of condoms.
The month-long celebration is centered on the theme: “Life for the Future Generations to come.”
A tree-planting activity is scheduled at the Parks and Wildlife in Quezon City on February 16. The event is in view of providing healing to women who have experienced the loss of a baby. Women are encouraged to name the tree they plant after an unborn baby; aborted, miscarried or stillborn.
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary Lito Atienza will provide 100 seedlings for the activity.
Aside from tree-planting, other slated activities include conferences, fora and seminars; youth contests on poster-making, song-writing, essays, poems, slogans or videos. People are also encouraged to join prayer rallies, participate in Eucharistic celebrations and Rosary for life devotions to show their respect and care for all human life.
A youth conference is also scheduled at St. Paul College in Pasig on February 23.
Pro-life month was first declared “Respect and Care for Life Month” by former Pres. Corazon Aquino through Proclamation 214 in February 1988.
