Stronger anti-abortion drive ordered after fetus discovery in Palace
|
|
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Friday expressed her grief over the discovery of a fetus inside a comfort room in the Palace compound early Thursday morning, even as she ordered authorities to intensify government campaign against abortion.
|
"The President is extremely sad over the discovery of a fetus in the New Executive Building. As a devout Catholic, a mother and grandmother, she is against abortion and believes strongly in the sanctity of life," Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye quoted President Arroyo as saying.
In light of the fetus discovery incident, Bunye said that the President put to task the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to step up its programs geared towards dissuading people from tolerating abortion.
"She (President Arroyo) has given instructions to the DSWD to intensify its community networking and outreach efforts to educate the public on the need to shun abortion as health and moral hazard," said Bunye.
Particularly, Mrs Arroyo, a mother of three, said intensified counseling efforts for unwed and teenage mothers will be promoted.
On Thursday, a janitor found the fetus dumped in the women's restroom in the New Executive Building or "Borloloy Building" which houses the offices of several Palace officials as well as the press working area.
The Presidential Security Group (PSG) took the fetus and brought medical experts to examine it. Members of the PSG are also reviewing footages from the building's closed-circuit cameras to see if they can identify who left the fetus. - Mark Merueñas, GMANews.TV
