Action Alert to all Family and Life Workers!

The fight against the anti-family/anti-life programs is now in the local level.
For the past fifteen years, the church and the pro-family/pro-life groups have been able to stop the passage of the DEATH bills in Congress. Most of us are familiar with the meaning of the DEATH bills by now – legalization of divorce (D), euthanasia (E), Abortion (A), Total fertility control or population control through contraception, sterilization and sex education (T), Homosexual unions (H). We can actually add another letter – S for the Sex Education being imposed on children 10 years old up.

Through consistent lobby among our senators and representatives, we have been able to explain the hidden agenda behind the nice-sounding titles of the bills and mustered enough opposition whenever these were presented on the floor. It was also heartening to see the response of parish organization members sit in the congress gallery to encourage our pro-life congressmen to speak out for the stand of the Church.

But lately, I have been receiving information that population control funding agencies are now approaching the governors and mayors for “reproductive health programs”, helping them build centers where contraceptives will be distributed, implementing the condom-promoting type of sex education in public schools, training midwives how to insert IUDs or even perform tubal ligations, etc. They are also aggressive in influencing the men in the barangays toaccept vasectomy or have their wives accept pills and Depoprovera injections.

When I got a text message from a pro-lifer in Davao City complaining about the condom promotion of DOH in their public schools, I immediately called Sec Francisco Duque. He vehemently denied that he allows such a program. He instructed his staff to look into the matter. The program might actually by the local City Health Department of Davao and not coming from the DOH central office.

This shows that parishioners and diocesan workers will have to be alert and vigilant regarding what is being implemented in their areas.

We would like to congratulate Councilor John Carlos G. de los Reyes for standing up during one of their sessions in Olongapo City to protest the Reproductive Health Code that was about to be implemented. Councilor JC”s brave act is an example of what citizens can do in order to protect our people, especially our children, from counterproductive activities using our tax payers’ funds, government employees and facilities. By the way, Councilor JC is the son of the late Mr .Sonnny de los Reyes, former President of LAIKO, founder of Serviam and Bukas Loob sa Diyos. And I am proud to claim that he was also a Board member of Pro-life Philippines.

There is a directive that citizens are to be consulted for any programs that are to be implemented in their locality. Who else but the residents of the town, city or province will know what is going on? We, here in Manila, depend on your reports if you want us to help you stop the evils going on there. It is also you who know would the government personnel and politicians in your area. Aren’t they your relatives, neighbors and friends?

As Councilor JC mentioned in his speech to stop the Reproductive Health Code from being implemented, shouldn’t the policy-makers focus their time and resources on serious family and social policies, programs on cultural development and the fair production and distribution of resources instead of anti-birth policies that will only perpetuate the culture of death, promiscuity and decadent morality in our society?

And as Ma Esquivel of Paranaque aptly said in her Letter to the Editor (PDI 9/20/07), in support for the action of Councilor JC , “the battle lines have moved from the Batasan to the provincial boards and city councils. We all need to be vigilant”.
