MANILA, 12 Dec. 2007— The Church will never change its stand against contraceptives, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)said.

CBCP president Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said any survey showing a public clamor for artificial birth control support will not affect the Church’s stand on the issue.
“Surveys favoring contraceptives will not alter the Church’s position and insistence in teaching the objective moral laws regarding the dignity of human life and family,” he said.
The widespread use of birth controls, he said, even with government support, do not change the objectives of the moral law on contraceptives.
A United States-based organization yesterday said majority of Catholics around the world are backing the use of contraceptives, particularly condoms.
This, The Forum for Family Planning and Development Inc. (The Forum) said, should serve as indication for the Church to reconsider it’s stand artificial birth controls.
The group also cited a recent survey by the Catholics for Free Choice (CFC) showing that 77 percent of Filipino Catholics that using condoms is “pro-life” because it saves lives by preventing the spread sexually transmitted ailments like HIV and AIDS.
But CBCP spokesperson Msgr. Pedro Quitorio downplayed the result of the survey, saying that it’s a “very remote justification.”
Quitorio also belied reports that condoms prevent the spread of STDs. “It’s not true,” he said.
In Thailand for example, he said, the more they use condoms, the more the AIDS become widespread.
He said that statistically, there is no proof that condoms can prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
