British Doctors Report Mental Health Problems after Abortion
|
Testifying before the British House of Commons, doctors reported that abortion seriously risks a woman’s mental health and makes her six times more likely to consider suicide. They were supporting a bill to make available to women information about abortion’s risks.
Dr. Trevor Stammers, a professor of medicine and practicing physician at St. George’s University, London, said that over the 26 years of his medical practice, many women have come to him with physical or mental problems resulting from their abortion. (Britain legalized abortion 40 years ago.) “The most recent research has shown very clearly that abortion presents serious risk to the long-term mental health of women,” he testified.

Dr. Robert Balfour, a consultant gynecologist, supported this conclusion, pointing to a Finish study of 5000 women (1987-2000) which revealed that women who had an abortion were six times more likely to commit suicide than women who carried their baby to term. He confirmed that there were more psychiatric admissions and suicides among women who had abortions than among those who gave birth.
Fifteen of Britain’s leading obstetricians and psychiatrists wrote an open letter to the London Times in October of 2006, asserting the psychological consequences of abortions.
The New Zealand study released last year found that 40% of those who have abortions suffer from mental health problems a subsequently. The extensive research with thousands of women found that problems such as depression, alcohol and drug addiction, sleep disorders, and thoughts of suicide were much greater among post-abortion women than among women who had miscarried or carried their pregnancy to term.
