Cruz laments barbarians in our midst

MANILA, 13 July 2007—Lingayen-Dagupan (Pangasinan) Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz said what happened in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan at midweek only showed that despite advances in science and technology, “there are still downright barbarians in this country.”

Cruz condemned the beheading and mutilation of 10 Philippine marines as an act of barbarism. While it has no reference to race, color or creed, barbarism comes from a sick mind and a “sickening pattern in civilization, (that has) no space in decent society, no reason for being,” he said.

In an interview over Catholic-run Veritas 846 and citing from his regular blog http://ovc.blogspot.com/ , he described the incident as “inhumanity at its worst”.

He, however, cautioned government authorities “not to answer barbarism with any equally barbaric move. He added “it is neither enough to simply condemn the hideous incident and stop at that.”

Archbishop Cruz explained “the demands of strict justice should be served by the pursuit of the perpetrators of a most hideous crime against the soldiers and by their pursuant punishment according to the gravity of their multiple capital misdeeds with gross inhuman elements.” It is “not vengeance but the basic demands of social order and national peace,” he added.

He cited that the “most painful and pitiful impact of the barbarism in question has immediate and intense relevance to the families, spouses and children of those massacred, mutilated and desecrated” for they will bear the burden of the bloody and merciless atrocity,

“And while it is not morally right, it however remains understandable that they bear anger and hatred, and may even want vengeance for their dear trampled-upon departed,” he added.

The fatal ambush and eventual massacre “serves as a grim reminded that “there are individuals who look like people, pretend to be people” though “in reality, they belong to another species, if not another planet as well, that have no right nor claim to be with people for “barbarians are a pre-historic species,” Cruz concluded.
