More than 30 CFC-FFL brothers and sisters from the Diocese of Paranaque arrived in 2 cars-full at the Batasan to register opposition to HB5043 currently being deliberated upon. Jett Reyes of Las Pinas had the largest delegation. We recognized the need to make our Congressmen aware that we are against HB5043 that threatens family and life. As such we continue to call upon our CFC-FFL brethren to get involved.
Xavy Padilla informed us that the Congress Gallery opens at 2:30pm, so we made sure we were there by then. We all met at McDonald’s in front of Ever Gotesco, along Commonwealth Ave. Everyone arrived at about the same time before 2pm. It was great!
The first problem we encountered was getting inside the Batasan grounds. We were told that we can only enter by 5pm since they give priority to the senior citizens. The creativity of our brethren paid off, as we were able to enter the premises.
Next hurdle was going inside the gallery. Our creativity didn’t pay off at the Gallery since only Jett Reyes and this writer were able to enter the gallery before 5:00PM. Xavy Padilla, as well as others, were already there. The rest proceeded to the Canteen to await the 5:00PM opening. There we met the brethren from CFC Global - Charlie Laiz, Benjie Fuentes, Cristy Balilo of Teodora, to name a few.

At around 4:00PM, we started to inch our way to the gallery. Since the north wing was already full, we instructed to proceed to the south wing, which, to our surprise, was occupied by the Pro-Bill group. We were later joined by what seemed like a bus-load of CWL women. This was a good time to observe those on the Pro-bill side who were young people and mostly students (from PUP). It brought back memories of the days of student activism. However, this time around, the cause was for a “safe and satisfying sex life!” How disturbing!
Cong. Lagman et al showed a 30-minute slide presentation of pictures of their pro-bill supporters and their gatherings. They then proceeded to the other bills at hand. What was disturbing was the method of approval of the bills which was just based on “ayes” and “nays”. There was one bill where the “nays” were louder than the “ays” and there was no actual counting of hands. At that point the Speaker for that session asked for a repeat in the voting. To our layman’s ears, the “ayes” and “nays” sounded the same, to which the Speaker for the session declared the bill approved. We were all aghast! Is that how it goes? Will the RH bill get the same treatment? So we really need to be present as a force in the gallery.
Pro-lifers and Pro-bill supporters were almost the same in number. Bishop Tobias was there. The CWL were from Pampanga. We really need to have numbers to go there regularly. The pro-bill supporters even had some sort of rally in front of the building with media covering it. They were shouting slogans. Cong. Lagman even went out to greet them.
Seeing this made all of us realize the need to mobilize the community, the parish, and the diocese. The advantage of pro-bill proponents is they are used to the ways of politics. Now, we are learning.
We are very happy to have the likes of Cong. Mandanas and Cong. Zialcita supporting us.
Maybe we can also come together and help the Diocese of Novaliches mobilize our brethren for support. Let us also come together in prayer as decision on the bill is due October 8.
We had a great time coming together as brethren and as Christians in the gallery. We learned so much too in truly putting our selves on the line to defend life. JOIN US!!!!
