Prelate confident majority of lawmakers won’t support repro health bill

MANILA, CBCP Episcopal Commission on Family and Life Chairman and San Fernando (Pampanga) Archbishop Paciano B. Aniceto said he is confident the controversial House Bill on Reproductive Health will not get the required majority in Congress.

In an interview with Catholic-run Veritas 846 Thursday morning, Archbishop Aniceto said they met the Pro-Life lawmakers yesterday at the House of Representatives where a concelebrated Mass was held.

“We asked for God’s blessing and graces that lawmakers be able to discern, pray and listen to their constituents, for them to respect the rights and dignity of their constituents, majority of whom are Catholics,” the 71-year old prelate said.

He expressed optimism that the country’s lawmakers will continue to believe in moral law which respects and values human life, the dignity of women and the sanctity of family and marriage.

Aniceto cited the bill as anti-poor pointing out that our main advantage over other countries is our vast human resource.

“Filipinos are industrious, intelligent, creative, and just give them the opportunity to work and they make themselves productive,” the prelate said.

The archbishop said Catholic lawmakers should come out in public and support the pro-life conviction of the Catholic Church.

“These lawmakers should recall they were elected by a great majority of Catholic voters so it is expected they will listen to their conscience and remember the Ten Commandments,” he further added.

Asked of the existing lobby in favor of the Reproductive Health bill, Aniceto said that due to huge profits expected out of revenues from contraceptives, these pharmaceutical companies have shifted their attention to countries like the Philippines.

He said European countries and even continental America have began to feel the ill-effects of what he called “demographic winter” with the ever-increasing number of elderly people who make up the gray population.
