Fetus hidden in basket of fruits offered to Catholic priest

It was reported that a four-month old fetus hidden in a basket of fruits was offered to a Catholic priest who celebrated a Mass in Quiapo Chuch over the weekend.

In Ms. Legaspi's interview with Catholic Church-run radio Veritas Sunday, Monsignor Gerry Santos, president of the Manila archdiocesan parochial school association, said the unborn child was inside a bottle together with a rosary and placed in a basket of fruits.
Santos said the basket of fruits was given to him after he celebrated a Mass for the Nazarene Catholic School about 9 a.m. Sunday.
“Walang offertory pero may alay doon nakalagay sa table and then after the mass pinauwi sa akin ng Mother Butler (The Mass has no offertory but the fruit basket was on the table and the Mother Butler organization gave it to me)," Santos said.
He said he brought the basket of fruits to the house of his parents where he was supposed to have lunch but when the household helper discovered the fetus they lost their appetite to eat.
“I got upset, we were not able to eat our lunch because my parents were very disturb on what happened. They are traumatized so I brought the fetus back to Quiapo Church and then I blessed the aborted fetus. Then I asked the staff to bring it to La Loma cemetery which has a place for aborted fetus," Santos said.
Asked if he sees the Church’s shortcoming with the abortion of the child, he said he cannot say that there was a shortcoming but he acknowledged that the Church should work hard on its pro-life stand.
“The Church as teacher should strive hard to teach the importance of life despite the hardships and poverty. We should teach people not to hurt or kill other people. We really have to do more challenges on ourselves," Santos said.
He advised those who are facing unwanted pregnancies to go to the parishes and convents instead of abortion clinic and opt for adoption instead of abortion.
“The life of a person is important, from the moment of conception. The mother’s womb is a sanctuary of life and the mother should fight for the life of her child," Santos said.
He added teaching the importance of dignity of life should start in the parishes, homes, schools and the whole community.
“We really have to call attention, we really have to care for life, we have to proclaim life, we serve life and we have to celebrate life," Santos said.
Upon reading this piece of news, Sr. Pilar Verzosa, RGS, Chairperson of Pro-Life Philippines, expressed her sadness and regret that Prolife, which provides crisis pregnancy counseling and human sexuality education wasn't able to reach people like the mother of this aborted child.
"As Monsignor Gerry Santos aptly puts it, it is a challenge that we should take up to work harder to spread our message of life to everyone," she said.
