Doctor: FDA ignoring medical evidence vs. 51 contraceptives

Dr. Ryan Capitulo gives a talk to pregnant mothers, March 10, 2017.

MANILA – A obstetrician-gynecologist believes the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s recent declaration of 51 contraceptives as non-abortifacient is ignoring crucial medical evidence to the contrary.

“By certifying the 51 contraceptives. FDA is saying that the 51 contraceptives can
never prevent the implantation of the fertilized egg or embryo. This is not true! FDA ignored medical and scientific evidence,” said Dr. Ryan Capitulo who is board certified in obstretics and gynecology as well as in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

It can be recalled that the Supreme Court put on hold the full implementation of Republic Act No. 10354, also known as the RH law, pending re-certification of some 51 contraceptives in question, which includes Implanon and Implanon NXT, contraceptive implants whose abortifacient nature has been hotly debated, but which Capitulo claims even the implants’ website verifies.

“Implanon causes thinning of the endometrium. Implanon can also alter the endometrium on a molecular level. A fertilized egg or an embryo cannot implant on a thin and altered endometrium,” explained the medical educator.

According to Capitulo, Implanon has three contraceptive mechanisms: prevents ovulation, thickens the cervical mucus, and alters the endometrium. The first two mechanisms are contraceptive but non-abortifacient, but the last is abortifacient, he explained. It is “illegal according to RH law itself and our Constitution.”

According to him, the Supreme Court’s directive to the FDA in the G.R. No. 217872 ruling issued on April 26, 2017 upholds the primacy of life.

“In weighing the evidence, all reasonable doubts shall be resolved in favor of the protection and preservation of the right to life of the unborn from conception/fertilization,” reads the document.

Meanwhile some of the country’s prolife groups like Prolife Philippines, Alliance for the Family (ALFI), Filipinos for Life, and Doctor for Life, among others, launched an online petition for the FDA to reverse the “unscientific and invalid approval” of abortifacients.
