From Shame to Shameless

naked

When Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, they realized that they were naked, and so they hid, making clothes out of fig leaves.

When the models of Bench’s Naked Truth event burst into the catwalk last Saturday, they were almost naked, and barely clothed, save for some. The difference? They did not feel any shame. They were shameless.

This is what Bench feels right now too. Shameless. Bench is laughing all the way to the bank because it used an old formula: sex sells. Bench then twisted this formula to come up with something so cavalier against morals. It is cheap, it is so brazenly in-your-face, and it made them more money.

That new formula combines the commercialization and objectification of men and women. Sex sells, and gives you money; Money, in turn, gives you access to more sex. In short: soft pornography.

There was a time when we insisted on putting the family’s PC in that spot in our house where we can all see it,  just to make sure we can see what our children are viewing online. Some of us are even so protective to the point of researching the history of our children’s online activity and blocking some sites that are harmful to our family’s morals.

Then Bench comes along with this kind of a gimmick that sells and objectifies its models. Come to think of it, why should we be surprised? Every Bench store has huge posters of men and women in skimpy outfits. And everyone can see them, from the very old to the very young.

Come to think of it, other companies also do this. FHM magazine does it every year too. But let’s just focus on Bench first. Ironically, this came out during the height of all this clamor for “equality.” The UP Pep squad took to the court and used their cheerdance number to promote the LGBT advocacy, specifically the equality agenda. After that, the hashtag  #equality was on every other status and tweet in social media. Whether they really understood the underlying issue behind it is a different matter altogether.

Then came Bench’s objectifying and disgusting show, epitomized best by actor Coco Martin holding a woman in a leash, as if the woman was some wild animal. Clearly, Bench has sunk to an all time low with this gimmick; in an age where human trafficking and physical, emotional, and sexual abuse are still rampant, they come up a stinker like that Coco Martin bit.

And where are all those groups clamoring for equality and women empowerment? Why are they so silent?

Can Bench be so brazen and get away with it? Not so fast.

From the Revised Penal Code:

 Art. 201. Immoral doctrines, obscene publications and exhibitions and indecent shows. — The penalty of prision mayor or a fine ranging from six thousand to twelve thousand pesos, or both such imprisonment and fine, shall be imposed upon:

(1) Those who shall publicly expound or proclaim doctrines openly contrary to public morals;

(2) (a) the authors of obscene literature, published with their knowledge in any form; the editors publishing such literature; and the owners/operators of the establishment selling the same;

(b) Those who, in theaters, fairs, cinematographs or any other place, exhibit, indecent or immoral plays, scenes, acts or shows, whether live or in film, which are prescribed by virtue hereof, shall include those which (1) glorify criminals or condone crimes; (2) serve no other purpose but to satisfy the market for violence, lust or pornography; (3) offend any race or religion; (4) tend to abet traffic in and use of prohibited drugs; and (5) are contrary to law, public order, morals, and good customs, established policies, lawful orders, decrees and edicts;

(3) Those who shall sell, give away or exhibit films, prints, engravings, sculpture or literature which are offensive to morals.

Clearly, Bench has broken the law. What they showed was against public morals, and was very tasteless.

But wait, there’s more.

They issued a public apology hours ago, only to remove it later.

This is a copy of the said apology which was removed.

It is time that we make Bench feel our collective anger over their degrading show.We are calling for a boycott on all Bench products. Meanwhile, Pro-Life Philippines will take the initiative in looking for businesses and establishments, especially clothing lines that promote pro-life and pro-family values.
