My Mother Chose Life

By:  AJ Perez

I have been active in the Pro-life advocacy for several years now, and I owe my zeal for life to my mother. She wasn’t an active pro-lifer, but my mother taught me everything I needed in order persevere in such a challenging commitment ever since I was a kid. I look back on all those days with happiness and gratitude. Above all, she chose life – my life – when she could have taken the easy way out during that time of her life when she was most confused and troubled.

My mother tells this story every time she has the opportunity.

When she was pregnant with me some decades ago, she was afflicted with hypertension and heart disease, among other illnesses. Her doctor told me that a “procedure” done promptly could avert a very fatal childbirth if she decides to go through with it.

Nowadays, this is the mantra of all those who have been preaching the Gospel of Contraception: no woman should die giving birth. While at face value, this holds some kernel of truth, the statement is geared towards abortion in the name of keeping the mother alive. My mom felt very confused because of the advice of the doctor. She really wanted her baby, but she had to think of her family as well; she had a husband and two kids, after all. In her distress, she called upon the Lord, and she felt drawn towards Binondo church. There, she talked to a priest about her dilemma. The priest gave her a challenge: to trust in God and choose life!

A few months later, my mother was in the delivery room. Her blood pressure shot up to 180/120, and her life was on the line. Because of the prayers of the people around us, I was born on December 21st, 1980, via C section. Because I was a month premature, I had to stay at the hospital for a few days; nevertheless, my mom, and the whole family, was elated that I was born without any complications, and that no one had to die that day. My mom chose life!

A few decades later, I decided to pay it forward by becoming a full-time worker for Pro-Life Philippines and starting Filipinos for Life. My life is a testament to the sacrifice and risk made by my mother. I can never repay her fully, except to dedicate my life in the service of all confused and hurting mothers out there considering abortion, and to preserving life from conception to natural death.

Thank you, Mama, for letting me experience the joys and pains of life. Thank you for your love and support, and for forming the person that I am now. I shall always strive to be a great man in the eyes of God because I owe you that much – to make my life extraordinary, and to give my life in the service of those who need me.
