Social Media as a Tool for Advocacy

Mr. Anthony Perez & Ms. Marilou Agsaluna were sent as representatives of Pro-Life Philippines with Pro-Life Phils. Board Member, Mr. Willie Villarama to the 2nd Catholic Social Media Summit held at the San Juan de Letran College in Manila last November 23-24.  There were many speakers who spoke about their own specializations in the field of social media – from evangelizing in Twitter to creating videos that help spread the Gospel. The main thrust of the summit was summarized very well by Msgr. Paul Tighe, the adminstrator of the Pontifex twitter account, and Fr. Stephen Cuyos, tech and social media geek: we have to be responsible social media users, and all our posts, tweets, hashtags, and pictures should lead people closer to Christ.

The most memorable talks that we have attended are:

1. Ms. Anna Cosio – she described the humble beginnings of her group, the Filipinos for Life, and how a group of people who knew one another only through Facebook decided to meet in the real world and vowed to take the fight against the RH bill to the next level – through education and advocacy, both online and offline.

2. Mr. Edwin Lopez – a pro-lifer and an expert in advertising, he stressed the importance of expressing our thoughts and ideas in a simple manner that will be easily understood by the masses.

3. Bro. Marwil Llasos – we were all mystified why he left the limelight after not having garnered enough votes to be senator. It turns out that he took the time off the public eye and off social media in order to rewrite his book – DEFENDING MARY, OUR MOTHER.  The summit was the first time many have seen him publicly after the elections, but he had not lost  any of his passion nor his excellence in speaking and communicating his love for Mama Mary.

As for Ms. Malou, aside from the learnings from the speakers, she valued most the Big C for her of this summit. A reflection from each participants on what the summit is all about. She valued most the CHARITY of each participants. The warm smile, sensitivity, caring and generosity she experienced reflects  Christ to those people behind the ministry of sharing the love of God in social networks.

Here is a video of the recently concluded 2nd Catholic Social Media Summit. May we be responsible and zealous OMGs – online missionaries of God!

You are important, you can make a difference. But more importantly, you are more powerful if you work together and when you are united under God. -Msgr. Tighe
