Church won’t tolerate same-sex marriage—CBCP exec

local news

MANILA, August 2, 2013 –A Catholic priest reiterated the Church’s position on homosexuality clarifying that the Church fully embraces gays and lesbians but same-sex relationships and same-sex unions are unacceptable.

“We accept them, even if they have same-sex attraction but we cannot accept if they will have same-sex relationships or same-sex unions,” Fr. Melvin Castro said in an interview over Church run Radyo Veritas.

Castro is the executive secretary of  the Episcopal Commission on Family and Life of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

Speaking in the vernacular, Castro also added that gays and lesbians just like anybody else can be ‘saints’ if they live a chaste life.

“Anyone could be called by God regardless of their sexual orientation if they live a chaste life, do not involve themselves in sexual intimacies with the same sex, doing good for another, and that they adhere to the will of God,” Castro said.

He reiterated that ‘the Church will never abandon its teachings’ on marriage which is between a man and a woman and not of the same sex.

Castro also clarified the words Pope Francis when he said last Monday that gays should not be marginalized or judged. The Pope clearly did not change any official Catholic position contrary to many media headlines.

“The words of Pope Francis is clear that he has no right to judge gays and lesbians especially when they have changed and are willing to go back to God,” said Castro. (CBCP for Life)
