Continue your yes to life’, U.S. archbishop tells PHL youth

ITAIPAVA, Brazil, July 24, 2013—Giving a special message, specifically about the ongoing fight against the RH Law, a Texas archbishop exhorts young Filipinos to continue upholding the value of life.

“There are many choices and there are many laws, but not every one of them is good,” San Antonio, Texas Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller said in an exclusive YouthPinoy interview on July 21 after he gave a pre-World Youth Day (WYD) catechesis to English-speaking pilgrims, which included ECY Philippines pilgrims, at the Parque Municipal de Itaipava.

He explained laws should be able to help us live “according to the dignity that God gives us.”

Human dignity, the archbishop explained, does not come from laws, but from God.

He stressed, young Filipinos should continue to “work for life, [saying] yes to life.”

The best way, he added, for young Filipino pro-lifers to champion life in the political arena is to be “open” to God at all times.

“You are loved by God, willed by God. Isn’t that awesome? You exist because God wants you to exist. That is not a choice,” explained Archbishop Gustavo, who serves in Texas, which recently passed a House bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks.

Utilization of people

In his talk to WYD pilgrims from Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Philippines, he explained societies are forgetting why human life — all forms of it — is of value.

“For many people who reject this concept [of God-given dignity], people become part of the great machine…of the world, that is expressed in movies, advertisements,” Gustavo said, explaining how utilitarianism breeds the thinking that people are dispensable simply because they are unborn and unwanted or old and incapable of working.

Recently, the Texas Senate passed House Bill 2, the Omnibus pro-life bill that will ban abortions after 20 weeks in vote of 19-11.

On July 21, thousands of pilgrims from France, Portugal, Ecuador, Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica, the U.S., Canada, El Salvador, Mexico gathered for the closing of the Diocese of Petropolis’ Missionary Week. [Nirva’ana Ella Delacruz]
