Astounding advances in genetic engineering brought about by scientific and biomedical breakthroughs, specifically the discoveries made in the Human Genome Project, presents to us numerous benefits and equally numerous ethical dilemmas. It makes us rethink of the meaning, beginning and end of human life. It may even alter our understanding of the very foundations of our faith in a God who is the Lord of life and death. While increasing number of people is now relying on genetic engineering for treatment and therapy, many institutions are wary about the possible consequences to life itself and to human culture.

As educators and counselors, theologians, missionaries and lay evangelizers, we are challenged to stand firm in our faith and proclaim the truth about human life and God’s dominion over it. Peter advised us: “Be sober and alert. The devil is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resists him, solid in your faith.”

Speaker: Prof. Marlon Patrick P. Lofredo, M.B.

Chair, St. Paul University System Sub-Committee for Life

Asian Bioethics Association
