CBCP: ‘Divorce law could destroy struggling but repairable marriages’

Giving struggling couples an easy option to jump ship is like consigning still fixable marriages to an instant death. This was one of the main messages of the Philippine bishops in a pastoral statement on the pending divorce bill, issued March 13, Tuesday. “In a context in which divorce is presented as an easy option, marriages and families are bound to break up more easily,” said Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines president Archbishop of Davao Romulo Valles. 4 out of 10 marriages The prelate also posed the question of whether the Philippines is setting out to follow the…

Divorce is a deadly killer!

Pardon the quite unsubtle clickbait title. It is, to be clear, not meant to disrespect or make light of anybody’s circumstance. But two things: this article’s focus is on divorce specifically (and not of couples contemplating it). But also, it describes really how strongly some people feel about the matter. Let’s face it: divorce signifies failure. It’s hardly a thing to be celebrated. Nobody gets married, in fact nobody grows up, hoping to get divorced. Something went wrong and in an array of difficult choices, divorce happens to be one of them. But it’s far from the best solution. Divorce’s…

Bishops speak out against bill to permit divorce in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines, August 8, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — Though given little chance of passage in the Philippines House of Representatives, a divorce bill introduced by the tiny Marxist-oriented Gabriela Party has drawn strong criticism from three of the country’s Catholic bishops. In a joint statement, Bishop Ruperto Santos of Balanga declared, “Divorce spawns a host of problems, especially for children. It weakens the institution of marriage. Already we see many families being separated by work,” referring to the growing number of men and women working abroad, and remitting earnings home to support families. “Let us not move towards a weakening of…

The meaning of ‘the common good’

Being Right By Jemy Gatdula This is a topic I’ve written about previously but feel it bears revisiting. The term “common good” is quite fashionable nowadays. From the environment to education reform, common good has been uttered to add credibility to whatever measure is being proposed. Unfortunately, there is a need to clarify what is really meant by the term “common good.” To start, let us discuss another oft-used phrase: Salus populi est supreme lex, which many people understand as “the will of the people is the supreme law.” Which is not really the case. The closer translation goes like…

CBCP pastoral guidelines for discerning the moral dimension of the present-day moves for Charter change

Catholic bishops pose for a group photo after the opening Mass of their 116th plenary assembly at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral on Jan. 27, 2018. SAMMY NAVAJA “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Cor. 3:17) Beloved People of God: Introduction To change or not to change the Constitution, that is the fermenting political question of the day. The move for Charter change is, and has been, the proposed vehicle to adopt Federalism as a new form of government. But ignored in the welter of political opinions regarding Charter change is the fundamental moral dimension of…

Either pregnant with child or pregnant with hubris

Peculiar problems arise when government thinks itself all knowing and prescient. Call it Murphy’s Law or the law of unintended consequences. Either way, Greek mythology is full of people laid low by hubris. As Prometheus was wont to say: “those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad.” I write this because the House of Representatives recently seem to have acquired a mania for pushing legislation that are quite detached from reality. As well as insisting in measures repeatedly tried in the past and, repeatedly as well, proven wrong. So, Albert Einstein: “insanity is doing the same thing…

Pre-Valentine’s Candy-giving to tackle ‘enemy’ of true love

For years, pro-life volunteers have been giving away free candy on Valentine’s Day to promote the value of waiting for true love, sacrifice, and chastity among the youth. MANILA – A few days before Valentine’s Day, young people will be giving away candy not just to promote true, chaste love but to speak up against pornography, what many consider an “enemy of true, self-giving love.” “Porn is the enemy of true love because the end point of porn is almost always masturbation, or self-pleasuring, while love needs both men and women, but especially the men, to be selfless and to…
