    Hard Truths

By the morning of May 14, a day after the elections, there was only one thing in the minds of the Catholics: “What happened to the Catholic Vote?” As of this writing, the counting of the votes have not been finished yet, although it is quite inconceivable that our pro-life bets from the Ang Kapatiran will garner enough votes even to reach the top 20. There are six known anti-RH and six known pro-RH in the so-called magic 12. Risa Hontiveros, a staunch supporter of the…

    Necessary Changes

The current election period reminds us of those times when the circus came to town. There are lots of glitz, glamour, and entertainment. There are good guys, and those who claim that they are the good guys. There are lots of animals too, crocs being the most numerous. And of course, there are clowns. Many people are slowly waking up to the fact that politics, in general, and elections, in particular, breeds crooks and vipers among men. How else can you explain a man running for a senate seat, spending millions on ads on both TV and print, just to…

    THE BEAUTY OF LIFE

From the moment of conception, from that time when the cells divide to create a new life that is you, God has already thought about you; who you are, and the purpose of your life. The circumstances of your conception may be accidental or less than ideal (rape, unplanned pregnancy), but with God, the author of life, there are no accidents. He has set you apart and put in your heart a purpose, a mission that you will carry out in your life. Whether it is…

    The Way of the Cross

Filipinos have long identified with the suffering Christ, and the millions of devotees flocking Quiapo on the feast of the Black Nazarene is a testament to that. The Filipino way of life can be considered the way of the cross because of its many hardships and trials. For the vast majority, the crosses seem to be their permanent companion on their journey; this is perhaps why the ordinary pinoy is aptly named Juan dela Cruz. If the events of the past few weeks are to be…

    Protecting the Unborn

Today, we celebrate the Day of the Unborn, which is also the feast of the Annunciation, the day when the angel Gabriel told Mary about God’s plans for her, and her part in salvation history. Nine months later, we celebrate with joy and a festive spirit the birth of our Lord into this world. God had plans for Mary and her future child, but this is an event that is not exclusive to the Mother of God, nor is Jeremiah 1:5, which says “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you,”  exclusive to future prophets. The truth is…
